Fat Tire Bike Tour Parte Dos

We loved the Fat Tire Bike Tour in Paris so much that we jumped at the chance to use the same tour company in Barcelona. Quite a bit colder (about 48 deg) and thus a much smaller tour group of just 6 (a very nice family from Perth, Australia joined us on the tour). Like in Paris, it was a great way to see the city. We wish US cities were as bike friendly as Barcelona!

Cathedral de Barcelona, in the Gothic Quarter, was built in the 1300-1500s. We learned that the Patron Saint of Barcelona is a 13 year old martyr named Eulalia who was tortured over 13 days by the Romans in the 300s for being a Christian. Her statue is near the top of the cathedral
I loved the narrow and very ornate streets of the Gothic Quarter
Government buildings. We learned alot about Catalonia’s struggle to become independent. Similar to Texas attitudes, although I guess the US has never imprisoned the Texas governor for inciting a protest:) The yellow ribbons are all over and are shown if you against the imprisonment of Catalonia’s former leaders
My favorite place so far. Gaudi’s Cascade. Built by Gaudi when he was just an apprentice. We’ll count it – 4th Gaudi.

Beautiful Arc de Triumph that was built for the 1888 World’s Fair. It turns out they could have had Eiffel’s Tower instead they turned down his ugly tower in favor of a red Arc.
We had a picnic lunch at the beach. Our tour guide reminded us that we were doing our tour on the coldest day of the year:)
Beautiful bike path along the beach

La Monumental- Museo de Taurino

After the bike tour we made our way to back to see the last bull-fighting arena in Catalonia (correction from yesterday, bull-fighting was outlawed only in Catalonia)

We had a lovely dinner at a bistro called Firebug just a block away from the hotel before our first adventure of riding the metro(subway) to see Cirque du Soleil – Toruk on opening night, which apparently was based on the movie Avatar! The show was amazing lots of aerial and ropes stunts and a story about two brothers saving their people from destruction. The costumes and set were technologically amazing!

After the ride on the metro we had this amazing walk through the 1992 Olympic area that was truly amazing, especially at night. The 4 column are symbolic in Catalonia- you see them everywhere
Olympic torch resting place next to the Olympic stadium, which is where the show was at
Toruk!
